I took a bridge tour the other day. It was pretty cool to be up there and see all the cool screens and instruments they use. They keep a digital and an analog map and route with all info on it at all times. The black box is actually cream colored and looks like a 4 foot fridge. They have a radar which tells you all the ships within a 200 mile range, (I think). Every ship has like a signal it gives out that tells the other ship computers who we are and where we're from. If you have a ship with no name who won't talk to us and is coming towards us… they are PIRATES! I jokingly asked if we had torpedoes to deal with them and the 2nd Captain, who was giving us the tour, said "no, but we have sticks to fight them with." He's a cute guy from Russia with a slightly quirky sense of humor. I liked him. Oh, and most importantly I got to wear the Captain's hat and I learned what a knot is. If we are going 30 knots an hour then we are going approximately 60 kilometers an hour. I'm not good with the metric system so I hope I'm not sounding stupid, but I think that's what it was. Of course I don't remember how to convert that into miles, but it sounded pretty fast…. Ok so I need to educate myself. I'll get back to you when I figure out the math.
Oh and I forgot to mention before… We have Archbishop Desmond Tutu. What can I say? He amazes me. For an Archbishop he is extremely liberal in my opinion and it's so wonderfully refreshing to have a religious leader who actually thinks and analyzes for himself. He is with us from Brazil to South Africa and we have been drilling him all these days. He's been answering questions from students and from panels of students and teachers since he got here. The wisdom that comes out of him is amazing. He speaks out for injustice to ALL people, including those who would be shunned by most religions. I just can't even begin to tell you what it's been like listening to him speak his mind. I really can't. We've talked about so much that it would take pages and pages to explain. And boy is he adorable! He laughs and makes the best jokes (very un P.C. at times!) and he does little dances when he's happy or laughing or just being cute. He's like this cute old man that you just want to hug and kiss and love. What I'll do soon is get you some quotes. He is so funny. What's really funny too is that his wife, Mrs. Leah Tutu, is with him and she is equally entertaining and wise.… and she is totally wearing the pants under her dress! And they joke about it all the time. You know there's nothing cooler than having Archbishop Tutu sitting in front of you in a baseball cap and a Semester at Sea t-shirt making jokes as he tells you how you can save the world. It's been heart breaking and inspiring as we talk about all the things that need to be done in the world; how far the human race has come and yet how much more we have to go before we are free of prejudice, poverty, disease and ignorance.
